What port numbers can I use?

You can listen on any valid TCP port number. Common choices include:

  • Ports 1-1023 -- Well-known ports (HTTP on 80, HTTPS on 443, etc.). These may require administrator rights or may already be in use by system services.
  • Ports 1024-49151 -- Registered ports. Good for general testing.
  • Ports 49152-65535 -- Dynamic/private ports. Best for ad-hoc testing since they are rarely in use.

If the port you choose is already in use by another application, Port Listener will display an error and you can try a different port.
