Will the victim know it is a prank right away?

Almost never. A mouse that freezes intermittently is such a common hardware problem that nobody suspects software first. The victim will spend considerable time troubleshooting their mouse -- cleaning it, reconnecting it, swapping it -- before even considering that a program might be responsible. This prank can go on for hours.
