Will the victim know it is a prank right away?

Usually not. Because the Start button still works and the movement is tied to the mouse, most people assume it is a Windows display glitch or a taskbar bug. They might try restarting Explorer, adjusting their display settings, or even rebooting the computer before it occurs to them that someone is behind it. The subtlety is what makes this prank so effective.
