Will the victim know it is a prank right away?

Rarely. Most people assume it is a Windows display bug, a graphics driver issue, or even a virus. They will right-click the desktop, check display settings, restart Explorer, and run antivirus scans -- all while the icons keep disappearing and reappearing. The cyclical nature of the prank adds to the confusion because the problem seems to "fix itself" before happening again.
